“More nature… on the doorstep”

As the project to re-create a wetland meadow at Chesworth Farm nears completion, Brian O’Connell, Chairman of Horsham District Council and Diane Sumpter, Chair of Friends of Chesworth Farm, marked progress with a formal opening of the new boardwalk.

Present and past committee members and representatives of local volunteer groups watched the ribbon cutting, and heard a message from the Friends’ President, Baroness Parminter of Godalming, who said, “Although the project is only just finished, birds not normally seen at Chesworth Farm and rare fauna and flora have already been spotted in the riverside walk. This is tremendously exciting for us and for the people of Horsham who can now enjoy even more nature at first hand on their doorstep.”

The remaining stages include some hedge-planting on the approaches to the hide screen and some permanent interpretation boards.

The work was undertaken by Horsham District Council, supported by the Friends of Chesworth Farm and guided by Sussex Wildlife Trust. It has been funded by developer contributions and grant aid from the Arun and Rother Connections Project (ARC) and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
